The OSU Extension, Van Wert County Economic Development (ED) Office partners with public and private entities to leverage existing resources and create new opportunities for businesses to locate within the county and meet their growth potential. Community analysis, business retention visits and the current economic needs are factored into developing an economic development action plan for our area. Following are the 2009-2011 top three priorities:
(1) Develop and certify the Van Wert County Mega Site through the Ohio Department of Development for attration of a regionally impacting manufacturer. The development of a 1,600 acre site will help shape the future development of the county and region. It is anticipated that development of the site will result in the creation of at least 2,500 higher wage jobs for the region and Ohio.
(2) Encourage entrepreneurship and the startup of small businesses to diversify the economy and create jobs. Further development of the Van Wert Innovation Center as a location for business startups and assistance. The space also operates as a one-stop shop for information on financing, incentives, and workforce available in Van Wert County. All permits, licenses, or anything needed to start, expand or operate a business are planned to be provided in one, central location. The main goal of this activity is to reduce or eliminate red tape for entrepreneurs trying to do business in Van Wert County.
(3) Promote Van Wert County's Quality of Life/Develop Tourism Base. Help to strengthen ties with the Chamber of Commerce, Main Street Van Wert and the Convention Visitor's Bureau to promote Van Wert County. Promotional goals include expanding the tourism base through promotion of existing and new events. Quality of life indicators will be tracked and promoted to encourage the location of new residents and to retain existing residents. The goal will also be to promote Van Wert County as a good place to retire; not just to stay and retire, but a place to come to retire.
