The 4-H Health and Safety Individual and Team Talk/Skit Contests will be held on Tuesday, June 12, 2012 at 6:00 p.m. at the Meigs County Extension Office
4-H Health and Safety Speaking Contest Rules and Registration Information
The registration deadline for entries is Friday, June 8th at Noon. Please complete the attached registration form and return to the Extension Office, P.O. Box 32, Pomeroy, Ohio 45769 to register. Required at the time of registration will be your Name, 4-H Club Name, Title of Speech (or Skit), and the Division.
Age Divisions: The Senior Division is open to 4-H youth 14 years and over as of January 1, 2010. The Junior division is open to 4-H youth who are 13 years old and under on January 1, 2010. Members of a team/skit group may be any eligible 4-H age (no Cloverbuds). There will be no age divisions in the latter group.
Contest Rules and Specific Content: All participants should be encouraged to study and coordinate their presentations around the items listed in the individual and team/skit score sheets. Specific areas to review are content, including inclusion of a local example and appropriately cited statistic (30%), organization (30%), and delivery and overall performance (40%). Prompters (i.e., scripts, verbal coaching, signaling and note cards) may not be used in any speaking category at area and state contests with one exception. Junior participants only may use note cards at the area contest. Individuals or teams using prompters, except junior participants at area contests, will be penalized 10 points.
Speaking Time Limits: Time limits for senior division contestant’s speeches are to be 4.0 to 5.5 minutes in length. Senior division speeches under 4.0 or over 5.5 minutes will be penalized 10 points. Junior division contestant’s speeches are to be 2.5 to 3.5 minutes with a 10 point deduction if under 2.5 or over 3.5 minutes. There will be no time allotted or credit given for question from the audience. Team Skits are 5.0 to 8.0 minutes. There is a 10 point deduction if under 5.0 or over 8.0 minutes.
Props/Other Visual Aids: NO visual aids are permitted for the individual speeches. Props are permitted in the team/skit category, but should not include trademarked or “brand names” of products. Live animals may not be used as props. No posters or printed materials that could be used as prompts will be allowed. Individuals other than the team/skit participants may assist in bringing props to the presentation area, but shall have no further physical contact with props after that point. Coaching or placement of props prior to the presentation start time is permitted.
