About Agriculture and Natural Resources
- Huron County has an economy that is heavily reliant on agriculture. Located on the extreme eastern edge of the corn belt, it’s not surprising that soybeans, corn and wheat are the county’s most plentiful crops. What is surprising is that Huron County is the top vegetable producing county in Ohio and is one of the top 100 vegetable counties in the entire United States. Farming operations continue to get larger with each passing decade, but family farms of all sizes still encompass the vast majority of agricultural production in our county, state and country. In Huron County there are over 800 farms with an average size of 264 acres. In 2008, the total agricultural receipts for agricultural commodities eclipsed $100 million, nearly double the number ten years previous.
