Camp Counselor Information

General Information

Camp Counselor Applications, Check back in Fall of 2012.
Completed applications are due back to the Extension Office by Tuesday, November 1; by 4:30 p.m. (No late applications or incomplete applications will be accepted). Applications must be completed by the applicant. Two reference forms (which will be attached to the camp counselor application) are due back to the Extension Office by November 10. Please note: Applicants must turn in a complete application, with references by the deadline, in order to participate in the skills stations on November 20.

Camp Counselor evaluation skills stations will be held. Applicants will begin their skill stations at 5:00 and finish at 7:00 p.m. The Greene County Camp Program Manager and Staff will make the final selection of who will serve as Camp Counselor during the 2012 Greene County 4-H and Cloverbud Camp. (There are no make-up dates.)

Please note this is the only time cabin buddies requests will be granted.
To help accommodate people that are unable to get to our office during regular business hours, we are offering a Camper Registration Round-Up this year. The office will be open this evening from 5:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. Only camp and Cloverbud Day Camp registrations will be taken this evening. In order to assure their registrations will be completed and off your list of things to get done, please bring all forms included in registration packet and payment in cash or check made out to: OSU Extension. Counselors will be on hand to showcase camp activities giving campers a preview of what they will do at camp.

After this date all camperships will be forfeited and a $15.00 per camper late fee will be incurred.

What do I bring to camp?
Check off your items on the packing list. Pack light, don't bring a lot of extra stuff, and put your name on everything!

Do I sleep outside?
No! Campers bunk-down in rustic cabins. Each cabin sleeps up to 9 campers plus 1 or 2 counselors/CIT. Boys and girls reside in separate areas. Located in each area are shower houses and toilet facilities.
* Cloverbud Camp is a two-day camp.

What about meals and snack foods?
Meals are served buffet style in the dining hall. Provided at each meal are nutritious foods - including a cereal/salad and fresh fruit bar. The camp canteen is open daily and has snacks and ice cream.

Camp Safety FAQ's

Who supervises camp?
Camp safety is our top priority. Trained 4-H Camp Counselors, Permanent Camp Staff, and County Extension Personnel supervise campers at all times. The permanent staff includes: a Camp Director, Lifeguard and Maintenance Team. Our cooks oversee the kitchen/dining areas. A Registered Nurse is available day and night. 

Is it okay to leave during camp?
For safety reasons and so all campers may enjoy the entire 4-H camping experience, campers will not be permitted to arrive late, be gone in-between, or leave camp early! We enjoy having each camper fully participate from the start of each camp to the closing of each camp. 

Can I have visitors?
Parents and family are welcome to look around when bringing their 4-H'er to camp. While camp is in progress, however, there will be NO PERSONAL VISITORS since this disrupts the camp schedule and can make both the campers and parents homesick. This also limits the vehicle traffic in and out of the campsite. 

Hey, can I call home?
No. Sorry, no phone is available for camper use. The phone is for staff use only and restricted to emergency use or approved camp business. Cell phones/pagers ARE NOT ALLOWED at camp!

How to Be a 4-H Camp Counselor

Selection Requirements

       Current 4-H member

       Age Requirement - You must be 14 years old and a high school freshman as of
       January 1, 2012.

       Previous Leadership Experience

       Participates in Camp Counselor Selection Process

1. Apply by November 1, 2011. Camp Counselor Application, Check back in Fall of 2012.

2. Return Camp Counselor Form Packet by January 15, 2012.
     (1) Counselor Contract - READ, sign and return
     (2) Counselor Standards of Behavior - READ, sign and return
     (3) Permission to Participate - READ, sign and return
     (4) Health History Form - have parents sign and return

3. Get Ready...
     Attend all Counselor Training Meetings and Counselor Camp. Refer to the training
     dates listed below.

4. Go... and have fun at camp.

Counselor Training Dates:

Important Note: The state requires at least 24 hours of counselor training, 12 hours in an overnight setting. Failure to attend any of our trainings may prohibit you from counseling at camp this year! If you do have to miss a meeting, then contact the Camp Director at least 2 days in advance so we can discuss options for continuing on in the counselor selection process.

Counselor Selection Process

• Objectives:

          Evaluate teenagers hoping to take a leadership role in the Camp Counselor
          process by assessing their skills in Teaching, Decision Making, Conflict
          Management, Teamwork, and Interview.

        Provide an opportunity for Camp Staff to observe the candidates’ interaction
        with peers and adults.

         Provide an educational training experience for the candidates, which enhance
         their future employability skills and prepare them for the expectations of
         future employers.

• Counselor selections will be notified by mail.
  
• Ability to work as a team along with Campers, Counselors, Staff, Volunteers, and permanent camp site staff.

• Demonstrates or shows potential for leadership skills.

• Commitment to participate in counselor training and to attend monthly meetings and camp counselor over-nighter, and to be at camp 24/7 the week of camp.

• Willingness to lead, announce, present, record, or deliver things in a timely manner that would be associated with Camp Counselor responsibilities.

• Ability to conduct yourself in a mature manner when dealing with stress or conflict.

• Possess a caring attitude towards campers when needed, not just when asked.

• Open minded and can see issues from multiple perspectives.
• Counselors are selected on the basis of camp experience, ability to take responsibility and leadership roles, ability to cooperate and work as a team member.
  
• For those who have been counselors, your previous counseling experience is taken into consideration.
  
• The training process is never "over". Counselors are continually being evaluated and must follow the Camp Counselor Contract and the Volunteer Standards of Behavior.
